RIP Leonard Nimoy

Legendary actor Leonard Nimoy passed away today at the age of 83.

I wasn't planning on posting today, but I also can't let this pass without reflection. So many people today, along with myself, will be remembering his role as Mr. Spock in Star Trek. And rightfully so. He was born to play the role and made it become the iconic character that it will always be. But he was so much more than that. I'll leave it to others who knew him to remind us of his life.

For me Spock was the heart and soul of the original Star Trek. A show that lit a spark within my own heart that still burns today for all things science-fiction, and science fact. A life-long wonderment at the vastness of space and time. And, to a large extent, compassion for all those that are different. To me that was always the real lesson to be learned from Leonard's portrayal of Spock - that despite each of us being alien to each other - that all beings share a commonality of spirit.

Live long and prosper.

Thank you.

Indeed he did. He was truly an inspiration.

I remember "in search of" which he narrated. That was a double whammy of interest, as it was Mr. Spock talking about mysteries and quasi-science here on earth.

Loved that show as well.

I had the privilege to fly just a few rows from him once, and planned an all out trekkie move and say how much I appreciated his work and ask for an autograph. Unfortunately as I exit the jet bridge, he was being escorted to one of those airport carts because he was late for a connection... :(

Bummer. Sadly I saw him a couple of times at conventions but was always working and never had the chance to meet him in person.

He will be missed, but as you described his legacy stays with a strong message of acceptance and comprehension. Live Long and Proper!

I agree that Spock was the soul of Star Trek. When humankind finally leaves earth and searches among the stars for other races, we hope to find the soul of Spock - both in those we find and also within ourselves.
Rest in Peace, Leonard Nimoy. You taught more than you may know.

The Spock character proved to all us geeky introverts who love space and science it could be cool to be all that and more. Spock encouraged me to be smart and logical when all the bullies in my backwoods schoolyard tried to convince me otherwise. I've never admitted this, but that character as much as any real person made it possible for me to dream I could go to school where I did and graduate, which was no easy feat considering my mediocre high schooling. Spock will always be with me and you. Mr. Nimoy made sure of that, even when he was frustrated and tired of being called Mr. Spock instead of Mr. Nimoy. For that I will always be grateful.
May we all live so long, and prosper so well....
LLAP, poignant clip specially given his last tweet to the world.

I was in elementary school when the original Star Trek came on and thus Spock was a big influence on my efforts as a young person to define and evolve my own personality. That character is indeed iconic, and Nimoy leaves behind him a great legacy.
