There Are Rules

In Eve Online there are rules that should be burned into every player's brain from day one. Rules such as, never fly what you can't afford to lose. Rules like this are not arbitrary, they come about through harsh lessons that other player's have experienced themselves. You should only fly what you are fully trained to fly is another good one. Just because you have Battlecruiser Level One trained doesn't mean it is a good time to jump into a Drake. (Although the evil Pirate side of me thinks that is a great idea!) Another rule is one that many of us have learned the hard way and that anyone who hauls goods across New Eden knows very well - never overload your ship.

If you can make one trip, you can make two. Once, long ago, I got lazy with my transport character and overloaded a Providence. And I jumped right into a trap, lost the ship, and all 6 or so billion isk it all represented. I knew I shouldn't have done it and I did it anyway. Since then, I've not lost another one. And these days I am extremely careful about what I pack inside. We learn the hard way.

This morning this player learned a hard lesson.

As I've said many times in these pages, I don't bring these kills up to shame anyone. We've all made our own share of mistakes in this game. I bring these up to illustrate a point and to try and help others from making the same mistakes. Although, once again, my Pirate side wonders why I keep trying. If everyone in Eve did the right thing, it would make for an extremely boring game. Which is also true. But having written this blog for fifteen years I can tell you with extreme confidence that won't happen. Right now, somewhere in this universe, someone else is already moving 50b isk worth of goods in a ship they shouldn't be.

Kudos to Kaeda, Tore, and Shark for being in the right place at the right time. And no, they had no prior knowledge this was coming through the gate. Just a random moment of extreme violence.

Remember kids, don't fly what you can't afford to lose. There are rules for a reason.

But don't listen to me. What do I know, I'm sure you have a better way.
