Yesterday on ABA Slack, and I don't remember how it started, but the conversation turned to films and I made a joke. One thing led to another and shortly I typed, "12 Years A Slave Implant" as a film that had been made more "Eve". It struck me that this would be a perfect lazy Saturday hashtag and so I started tweeting ideas. Before long it gained momentum and even CCP Paradox got in on the action.

Twitter is so transient and these things are gone in a moment, but in order to preserve at least 'some' of the ideas I've decided to post them here for prosperity. Thanks to Omran DiMarco from ABA for putting this list together and pasting it into our Slack channel.

Had this idea in my head this morning and here it is. I hope you enjoy it. This is more "digital composition" than "digital illustration", although there are illustrative elements within the composition. I leave the labeling to those that care about such things, because I don't. I create what I see in my head and use the tools at hand to achieve the result I want. And that looks a lot like what I saw in my brain cinema this morning.


BB71: A Cornucopia of Spaceships

We all like important internet spaceships right? The more spaceships the better right? Or are we getting too many to be easily to remember them all. A Mastodon on scan? That the hell is that and what does it do? Oh! Never mind!

Are we getting too many ships. Is it too complicated to remember them all and what their traits are? Do FC's these days need an encyclopedic knowledge of ship types unless they want their fleet to DIAF. With more and more ships being released each year will we ever reach "too many" or do you think there can never be too many important internet spaceship types?

It finally happened. After eight years of playing Eve a ship appeared on d-scan that I did not know. Let's be clear, I knew it was a transport of some kind. But which one? No idea. I actually used the "Show Info" function on a ship. Ahh, that one. I found it at a Command Office along with a Lachesis. A slightly different spin on the Recon Trap. Well played.

You may not be aware of my interest in spaceships, I know I keep it very subtle and low-key around here. So let me come out of the closet right now and tell you my secret, I LOVE SPACESHIPS! Ok, that might be the worst secret ever. Anyone that even has the slightest passing knowledge about me would probably say, "Isn't he the guy that draws those spaceships?" Yes, yes, that is me alright. (And you can buy those for yourself right here! Shameless plug.)

The number of spaceships available to fly has approximately tripled since I started playing back in 2008. We now have entire ship classes that didn't even exist way back in those Dark Ages. Like T3 Cruisers. And more Frigates, and more Pirate Faction ships, and more SOE Ships! And that pancake flipper ship! And those white ones... oh man those are very nice. And those Tornadoes!! And the Amarr one. And that Gallente one that looks like a 1950's Chevy. The Talos. Man, when was the last time I flew a Talos? Sheesh. And Ventures, and those blue Ventures. And that other Venture. And the Assault Frigates that need to be seriously helped. And that doesn't even mention Ship Skins! And those awesome new V3 Effects, and the rust and dust! Oh man.

We do have a lot of ships in Eve. But we will never have enough. And we are getting even more here shortly with the new Capitals being introduced. Which look amazing by the way. So what is the point of this post? We have a lot of ships, we need more?

Thing is, back in the day, there were a lot of useless ships sitting in hangars never being used. The refrain echoed throughout New Eden, "You don't want to fly that!", "If you want to start PvPing train Minmatar!" or whatever the flavor of the month was at the time. Since then Fozzie and Rise and the Five-O Team have accomplished nothing short of miraculous results with their balancing efforts. Not only do we have more ships, but we have more ships that actually DO SOMETHING. There are few remaining useless, or rarely flown, ships in our hangars. We are not done, not by a long shot. Assault Frigates need some serious love, as do Command Ships. Even so, we've made significant progress.

In many, many ways, it is far easier today. While we may have more ships available, those ships are easily classified into Classes. And those classes have clearly defined roles on the battlefield. So it is far easier to group knowledge about them than it used to be. To make assumptions, to anticipate roles, to address large groups than ever before. While our options have expanded and continue to do so, our ability to understand where each ship falls in that pecking order has also increased.

It sure is a great time to be playing Eve.

Rixx In Local


Yesterday I was teamed up with a new Stay Frosty pilot named Sam Record. Sam had just joined us and had never really PvP'd before, so I was showing him the ropes and we were having a blast. There was a Retribution in Asakai that kept showing up on d-scan and eventually landed in a plex. I had Sam align as I warped in to tackle. Sam was in a T1 fitted Executioner and I was in my Comet. I caught the Retri and began working on it and then called Sam to come in and assist. The Retribution would have exploded with or without his help, but again, I was trying to show him the ropes and encourage his first day of PvP in Eve. Retribution exploded and we let the pod go. Immediately local exploded in anger and nasty words. Based on the vitriol, I must have had a Falcon.

And then I got this sweet tear filled email:

whats ure best solo kill today? an atron? hahahaha scrub"

And shocker, I'm blocked from replying. Now this person obviously has no idea who I am or that I have over 4k more kills than they do. Or that I could have brought a bunch of other people to that fight and blobbed her properly. Or that I don't use links. Or anything else about me. Which is fine. This is why we encourage our pilots to give "gf" in local win or lose. Nothing is more pathetic than a sore loser.

And believe me, I explode in a lot of ships. I know. I am not an elite PvPer by any stretch of the imagination. I do not aim to be one. What I am is a workhorse, the content provider for my Corporation and those that fly with me, and an unstoppable force that PvPs every day. I don't care about losing ships. I have no fear. That is who I am. And I have become extremely good at that specific game-style. (Just the other day someone pulled a Recon trap on me solo in my Comet. I killed the bait ship and then started killing the Rook. He was in deep structure when I exploded. That is how I play Eve in a nutshell.)

So what kind of people do I encounter on a daily basis? Let's make a list. And yes, I have names for them all.

Trophy Hunters
These people want to fight me so they can have my name on their killboard. Which is fine, I enjoy these fights. The only issue, and something I have to always be aware of, is just how much they want it. They might have links in system, they may be using Slaves, or have back-up, or ECM. Any potential loss is a future link in local, so I have to be careful of Trophy Hunters. But most of the time I take the fight anyway.

Gophers
When I enter a system with people in local and then suddenly they are all in a safe spot or docked up, these are what I call Gophers. They pop their heads up to see if local is clear and then go back into their holes when it isn't. You can't blame them, and I don't. I can always come back later when things have calmed down, or warp somewhere and wait. I'm very patient like that.

Perchers
So there is usually a T1 Frigate in a plex they shouldn't normally be in, like a Kestrel in a Medium. This can be a Recon trap, but it can also be a Percher trap. You an easily tell when there are about 5-6 other people in local all holed up in a safe spot. I attack the bait and then they all warp in to blob me. This one is easily avoided. Or sprung. Sometimes its fun just to let traps happen.

Pirates Helper
This also happened to me yesterday. An Ishkur was approaching me from about 80k away. I was in my Comet and waiting patiently. I figured he would attack, people in Ishkurs are usually very confident people. At about the 40k mark however he stopped, aligned out and warped to a safe. No spike in local. Nothing changed. This is a perfect example of a moment when someone looks up your killboard, or uses Pirates Helper. And then suddenly decides that they better not engage.

Apologist
They warp off but then they feel bad about it and want to explain that normally they would stay and fight, but y'know, not right now. The excuses can be rather hilarious, from my wife is coming home, the tea is ready, the dog needs a walk, my low slots are empty, I need reps, I already killed you a gazillion times and another one would be silly - those are all real ones by the way. I get it dude. You don't have to fight me, it isn't called non-consensual for no reason. I'll catch you later.

Hang On A Sec
These are the "gimme a minutes", the people who want to fight me... eventually. Y'know, once I give them time to get links up in local and call for back-up. Believe it or not, if I'm otherwise bored, I often do wait and take the fight anyway. Beggars can't be choosers. It is always a bad idea though to give the enemy time and nine times out of ten I lose these fights. But again, you take what you can get. And I don't care about losing.

Provers
We currently have a lot of these around the neighborhood. These are different than Trophy Hunters, these are people trying to prove their own self-worth. The difference is obvious because Provers never travel alone, always have links up and running, and always bring more to a fight than they need. I bring a T1 Frigate, they bring an AF, etc. These are among the most annoying people in all of Eve. All you can do is keep exploding their ships and hope they change their ways. Or failscade, which is usually what happens.

The Angry Avoider
The other day in Ishomilken one of these showed up. They are rare, but it still happens from time-to-time. The Angry Avoider talks forever in local about how awesome they are, they will link kills that might even have your name on them, and they won't shut up. But they will never actually fight you. And nor will I fight them. It is always a bad idea. What I will do is wait for them in another system and then catch them and explode their ship later on. Funny, they don't talk much in local after that.

This list doesn't include Blobbers, Gate Campers, Recon Trappers, or that huge Goonswarm gang that caught me fighting a Slicer on the gate the other day. Those are just the kind of normal things you find in low sec these days.

Thing is, all of these people are awesome and they make Eve a fascinating, weird, funny and constantly challenging place to play. I wouldn't change a thing. Keep doing what you are doing, even when it makes no sense at all. Please don't stop.

What would I write about if you did?



On-Grid Links: How They Work


Yesterday I talked about the updates that Fozzie revealed on my podcast sneak peek for After Hours with Rixx Javix, which you can listen to here, about the future of on-grid links. It is a fascinating and extremely interesting solution to a long-term problem that solves a lot of issues that link boosting has had since day one. And while I certainly appreciated the conversation, not a lot of details are currently available on how this new system will work inside the game. Naturally. This is all very early.

But that doesn't stop us!! Nor does it stop my readers, one of whom sat down and wrote this speculation yesterday. He was going to post it as a comment, but I thought it was deserving of a follow-up to yesterday's post. So here is Rank Badjin's thoughts about how on-grid links might work:

"We have launchers for scan probes and we have launchers for warp probes, CCP needs to add launchers for booster probes. The use of this launcher and the probes it launches would be enabled by a new skill called "Booster Probes" or something similar.

Level I of this skill would allow the fitting of a T1 Booster Probe Launcher and some of the equivalent metas. Level III would enable high function metas and Level IV or maybe V would enable T2 launchers. The probes would also scale accordingly with the same skill. (I think I would make it V for T2 with a crazy training time to be honest.) There is an alternative to divorce the probes from the launcher as far as skill training, more on this later.

Each level of this skill would also enable more probes to be launched at one time using a scale similar to scan probes. The probes themselves would be fixed in space like warp interdiction probes and can be retrieved and reused only if physically scooped to the cargo bay. The probes would time out after a fixed interval. In the interests of keeping this on-grid, I think that interval should remain fixed without being affected by skills for each probe type but perhaps vary slightly between probes with significant extensions for dead-space and officer metas.

This next part may be a bit over the top, but I can see some definite incentive to do it, and some definite reasons not to do it.

Standardize launchers.

A “Probe Launcher” would be able to launch any probe small enough to fit in its tube. An “Expanded Probe Launcher” would be able to launch ANY probe. And I mean ANY. Two launchers period for every core, combat, survey, warp, and booster probe. A bit complicated to juggle skills so no one loses skill points in the change, but...now you can fit an Exploration Frigate, a Covert Operations Frigate, a Reconnaissance Cruiser, (a T2 Destroyer?), a Command Destroyer, a Strategic Cruiser, and a Command Battle-Cruiser, (and the Nestor?) to launch any probe that you have the skills to deploy. Perhaps Frigates would only be able to fit the “Probe Launcher” and the “Expanded Probe Launcher” would be limited to Cruisers and above by power-grid as usual.

Pros are obvious, fitting out ships for WH space just got a lot broader. Cons are also obvious, fitting out ships for multi-role functionality in PvP may be WAY too easy. This would shift the importance of Frigates and Destroyers up the scale immensely. There would need to be some benefit I haven't yet envisioned for Command Battle-Cruisers to fill. Perhaps Battle-Cruisers could function like HICs and have the option of a fixed on the ship location area of effect large enough to encompass the entire grid or a sizable portion of it."

Personally I think this is a rather interesting way to approach integrating a "link launcher" into the game as things stand now. The last time I personally launched a probe was almost five years ago down in Scalding Pass. I spent an entire day trying to learn how to use probes and eventually realized two things. One, I suck at probing. And two, I can't attack anyone in my probing ship. So I'm not the most experienced person when it comes to using probes. Cramming all the functionality of any "probe" into a single class of launcher does condense a lot of things and streamline the entire process.

I do like the idea of "link probes" more than I like the idea of "link bubbles" frankly. I find the idea of a gate covered in Warp Bubbles and Link Bubbles disgusting, not only to my sensibilities, but also to common sense. So if links are going to become AOE based deployable, "fire-and-forget" based, then attaching them to a launched probe makes sense to me.

On-Grid Links

Bubbled Gate

During my interview with Fozzie on the After Hours Podcast we got around to talking about the upcoming changes to off-grid links and boosters in Eve. As many of you already know, CCP has confirmed that links will be moving on-grid here in the near future. This move has been the fountain of much speculation since off-grid links were first introduced ages and ages ago. CCP has long maintained that the issues involved ran much deeper into code and technology than might be assumed and these hinderances were stalling any significant changes.

Those "walls" seem to have been removed with recent server upgrades, the introduction of "brain-in-a-box" and other changes. And we appear well on our way towards an entirely new way of thinking about links and boosters inside of New Eden. I recommend listening to the entire Podcast, but I'm going to go ahead and discuss the changes specific to on-grid links.

As Fozzie himself said, it is easier to consider the future of on-grid links if we think about the way Dictors are currently used. A Dictor can deploy a warp bubble and then fly away from it and leave the bubble where it was deployed. This seems to essentially be the idea behind on-grid links in the future. I'm sure the details will change in the coming months, but this idea is rather ground-breaking from a strategic and tactical perspective. If link effects become essentially Area-of-Effect boosts, a deployable effect, that the link ship can move away from - well that fundamentally changes the entire way we think about them inside of the game. To add further fuel to the fire, it appears that they also intend to move links out of Wing Command and Fleet Command positions within a fleet, essentially meaning that anyone inside a fleet can apply links. This change means you could have entire squadrons of Command Dessies or T3 Cruisers as link ships in your fleets.

Obviously this is very early news on the development front and many questions remain unanswered. How large is the AOE? Do skills determine the range? How long does the effect linger? Do only ships in your own fleet gain bonuses? (You'd think yes, but again, this wasn't addressed.) And is the effect visible to others? This last one is rather critical, as a visible effect would mean enemy ships could also try to avoid the link bubbles.

I'm also guessing that any ships exploded under the effect of the link bubble would show the link ship on their killmails. This is obviously something that I've wanted to happen for a very long time. But right now that is only a guess. It makes sense however.

As I said in the interview I am very encouraged by this direction. It means risk is re-introduced into Eve for link ships. And yes I know, they can be hunted down and removed with a lot of effort. The fact remains that off-grid links are relatively safe and impact fights significantly. The risk/reward bonus is highly in favor of those deploying them and against those that are not. This has created a significant problem for years. Removing that safety net and forcing links onto the field of battle, where they rightfully belong, is a huge step in the right direction.

We'll have to wait and see as more details become available in the coming months, but generally speaking I am a huge fan of this direction. It is a very Eve direction. Something that the previous system was not. No matter what side of the fence you come down on, you can't argue with that. Allowing an entire ship class to essentially avoid commitment and still be engaged in battle was and should never have been - Eve.

Now the players get to decide if they want to risk their ships and the other guys get to decide which ships to shoot. Just as it should be.

Links are about to become just another fleet comp decision. And I'm a big fan.

I had been editing my recent conversation with CCP Fozzie from Thursday and realized that a lot of what we had discussed was extremely topical and timely. It was then that we thought, we should probably get this up and running ahead of the site launch! Sort of a "sneak peek" if you will. Thanks to Adarics for making it happen today.

This one has been in the works, in various forms, for over a month. I finally had the time this morning to finish the final details and get it published. I continue to push myself in new directions and new challenges to become even better at getting what I see in my head to appear thru my hands. This is not easy, because the things in my head are so incredibly hard to do. I swear I can only get 30 or maybe 40% of the way there. But I will keep trying.

Steel City Eve Player Meet


On August 20th, 2016 my wife and I will be hosting the first annual "Steel City Eve" Player meet here in sunny Pittsburgh, PA! And you are invited to attend. We originally intended to have this in June, but then my wife realized she could kill two birds with one stone, since August 19th happens to be my 50th Birthday! So what better way to celebrate than to spend the day with my Eve friends? I can't think of one.

We have reserved a building in Pittsburgh's gorgeous North Park for the entire day. The park is huge and has many outdoor attractions, a large lake, tennis courts, baseball fields, zip lines, bike trails, and much more for the whole family. In addition, my wife will be working on getting local hotel discounts for those planning on staying overnight (details will be provided on the Eve Meet Page here as they become available.

Later today or tomorrow I'll be adding a Steel City Eve page to Eveoganda which will also serve as a information portal and sign-up page. We will be securing an alcohol license for the day, but the event will be BYOB. We will be providing picnic essentials, but if you'd like to bring something the sign-up Google Doc will have those details so we don't end up with 500 cookies. Although that wouldn't be so bad. The idea is to have a great day, enjoy each other's company and have fun.

And who knows what else might happen. Maybe we'll get to play "Blood of Empires"?

6 Years of Eveoganda


In January of 2010, after almost two years of playing Eve and reading other people's blogs about Eve, I finally decided to take the plunge and start my own. Back then I had no idea what I was doing, other than one goal - to have fun and share my adventures. I was directly inspired by other bloggers, CrazyKinux, Kirith, Roc, and many more that have since grown silent. A lot has changed, both in-game and out here in the Eve community since then. I've changed as well. My own life has gone thru catastrophic and gut-wrenching changes in those years. For good and for not-so-good. In so many ways, this place has been my own personal therapy, a place to express myself daily, to stretch the boundaries of my own creativity, and a fulcrum around which I have made many lasting and meaningful friendships. Some real, some imaginary, some virtual, but all of which have added up to a great adventure that I wouldn't trade for anything.

1,787 posts. Which is a yearly average of nearly 300, gulp. Thousands of images, logos, parodies, comics, wallpapers, videos, and god only knows what else. And soon to be a new venture into the world of Podcasting with the "After Hours with Rixx Javix" podcast, coming soon™! Where will we go next? In many ways, nothing much has changed since that very first day. I still don't have a plan. But my goal has remained the same, to entertain, to have fun, and to share my adventures with you.

Thank you for reading along and for sharing my adventures with me. This place has never once felt lonely or isolated, because of you. I write and draw and have fun alongside my readers, each and every day. And for that I am eternally grateful. Even for the Anon comments and the anger hate that pops up every so often. People are very passionate about Eve and I can appreciate that. In that way, we all share something in common.

I hope that we are all here to celebrate another six years!

Care4Kids


I just finished work on this very special poster illustration today for Care4Kids, which you can learn more about at this link. A few weeks back, after the JustD video was finished, we talked about the possibility of creating some art that could be auctioned off to help support the charity. Of course I said yes. I was immediately inspired by the concept of children using their imaginations to fly alongside spaceships from Eve. Care4Kids helps long-term Hospital stay children and so the imagery is both uplifting, aspirational and representational at the same time. Bright, colorful and hopeful.

Blood of the Empires Card Game


The Fountain War Kickstarter failed to galvanize the Eve Community and resulted in a tremendous amount of drama. (To say the least about it.) But there are consequences to that effort and the results that you may not be familiar with. One of those is a project that I've been working on for almost a year, in fact I brought early game design concepts with me to last year's Fanfest to discuss in private with several people. The concept is called Blood of the Empires and it is (or was) intended to be a new Card Game based on Eve Online.

In talks with CCP I was told that it would have to wait, as "other" projects were being prepared for launch during the same time-frame. So BoE was put on the back-burner and myself and my development team of volunteers (Marc Scaurus and Xander Phoena are two of them) waited to see what the results of the other projects would be.

The BoE Card Game would feature my spaceship art on the cards. With 142 pieces already done, the majority of the work on art is already completed. The game itself is rather simple and brilliant in its execution. Using the Alliance Tournament system for ship values, each player builds a Fleet using no more than 100 points. Then each player does battle with a selection of Action Cards featuring typical Eve related items, tactics, lore, history, trolls, and other actionable items. In this way each player conducts PvP with the other fleets until only one player is left standing. Depending on the number of players, a typical game session should run about 30 minutes.

The goal all along was to make the game fun to play even if you know nothing about Eve Online. And to build in game play that could make it easier or more difficult to play, depending on the skill level of those involved. In addition we also had plans for additional services, such as Mobile support, if the KS warranted it. The Mobile version would provide yearly point value updates, as well as additional functionality. Plus things like a Battle Arena play-mat, Pirate and Faction Expansion Packs, over-sized Collector Cards, skinned rare cards, branded sleeves, famous FC modifier cards, AT Winner Decks, etc. All depending on how well the community supported the idea of course. Imagine wooden or metal Deck Boxes engraved with the BoE logo. Every time a new ship is added to Eve a new card is added to the deck. The long-term potential of the game is staggering.

I've had experience with building card games from scratch before. I was involved with game-testing and development of a card game back in the mid-1990s for a small company you may have heard of called Marvel Entertainment. I was the Creative Director on the Marvel OverPower Card Game, which also became the DC OverPower Card Game and more. Not only did I help to develop the game, I also designed it. So I've successfully done this sort of thing before.

I'm bringing all of this to light right now because I'm a tad frustrated. My original plan, in light of the Fountain War failure, was to construct "test" decks and bring them with me to Fanfest for play-testing. Perhaps holding a Player Presentation and presenting the game at the event, having some buttons or cards to give out and generate interest in the game there. The idea was to create a grass-roots demand for the game and to help generate
some energy to use to convince CCP to support another kickstarter. This was my plan. 
However, as many of you well know, I'm not in a financial position to outlay thousands of dollars to build test decks for something that may or may not happen. I strongly believe in the project, I think the game will be amazing, but I have enough trouble making my mortgage every month. Much less bankrolling concepts that use someone else's IP. An IP I've had enough trouble with over the years I might add.

So, as usual, I'm turning it all over to the Eve Community. Anytime I have problems I can't solve I turn to you. I don't like keeping secrets and it is time this project became public. As I said many times in the wake of the Fountain War Kickstarter, the community can decide for itself what it wants to support and what it doesn't find worthy. And I believe in the power of those words enough to let this project come to light.

There are those at CCP who might be upset at me for publishing this post. I can't help that. I'd hope that they would understand the reasons why it has become necessary. I simply can't invest the time and energy needed to complete the card game, play test it, build test decks, all on the "maybe" of something happening down the road. With the potential fear of yet another "modified" Fountain War KS in the works, that raises its own concerns. If my original timeline had held, all of that would have happened already, the KS would have launched this week and we'd have completed decks finished in time for Fanfest.

So what now? I would like to see this game see the light of day. But I don't know what to do at this point. So I'm laying it out there for the community. What happens next is anyone's guess. If this is something you'd also like to see happen, then make your feelings known. If you can help in some way to make this happen, then please let me know. If you have suggestions, advice, or other comments, then I'd like to hear those as well. This community of ours is incredible in so many ways, we tend to figure things out for ourselves eventually. So maybe something positive will happen and we can move forward together. 

And maybe, if we're lucky, one day we can play Blood of the Empires together. I'd like that.

Why Does Rixx Have a Rook?


My good friend Drackarn beat me to this story today.

TLDR; I did indeed undock in a Rook over the weekend and briefly set-up a Recon trap in a medium plex.

I have over 150 fitted ships in my hangars, many spread around The Citadel and Black Rise, but most of them in my primary hangar in Ishomilken. A handful of them are fitted up for "special needs" as I call them, a Lachesis, an Arazu, a Rook and a few others. I even have a RLM Drake for fighting swarms of small ships. (Just a week or so ago there were 30+ frigates in a large plex and I took the Drake over to play, killed 2 or 3 of them before the rest ran off, was good fun.) I can honestly tell you that I do not own a Falcon. So why the Rook?

Its important to keep in mind that, in addition to being a solo and small gang pilot in New Eden, I am also the CEO of Stay Frosty and the Alliance Executor of A Band Apart Alliance. As such my responsibilities extend well beyond just undocking and looking for good fights, although that is what I mostly do. There is more to it than that. I am also the main content driver when I am on-line. I find fights, or draw fights, or take fights, or otherwise stir things up for the Corporation and our players to enjoy. I also serve as primary target for our pilots in most fights, 99% of the time I am the first target in any engagement. I also undock silly expensive things to break up station camps, or gate camps. And I also warp in and help ANYONE that is in trouble. And it is that last thing that made me start keeping fitted Recons in the hangar. Something I never did before.

But once Recons became immune to d-scan we started seeing them pop up from time to time. Since then about a half-dozen or so opportunities have arisen to form up to take them down. And in some of those cases, due to low numbers usually, I will take a Recon to defeat a Recon. It just makes sense. To catch a Recon baiter it is sometimes useful to become a Recon baiter.

And so this weekend it happened again. A Recon baiter who was using a Rook was found nearby and we only had a half-dozen or so pilots available to us. So I didn't hesitate, I undocked the Rook and took off to catch him. I made it clear in fleet chat that this was temporary and that I felt "dirty" doing it, but it was worth the chance. During the time when we were setting up inside a Medium plex a Firetail warped into us. I killed him without hesitation. He wasn't happy about it in local, understandably so. I wouldn't be happy about it either. In fact, I wasn't happy about it earlier when the same thing happened to me.  Those are the peeps we were after.

The other Recon pilot got away. And I docked up the Rook and got back into a Frigate. I don't apologize for using a Rook to catch a Rook. I'd do it again in a second. I also don't apologize for all the deaths I suffer because I'm often primary, or I warp in to help a fellow Stay Frosty pilot out of a jam, or the times I get blobbed because of who I am. My game is played on HARD mode every day. And I choose to play that way. I have ships in my hangar to fly, to die and to be used when needed.

And if you are going to use bait Recon tactics in my neighborhood just know that we will hunt you down and kill you. Being an advocate for good fights isn't just writing about it on a blog, it's also about doing something about it in space.

And when it comes to defending my pilots, I put everything I have on the line - everyday.





RIP David Bowie



David Bowie has always been there in my life, always out-there in ways that no one else managed to be, for as long as time continued to turn, proving that it was ok to be weird, to be different, and that being weird didn't mean also being ignorant, or rude, but that you could be a gentleman at the same time, breaking walls, standing for things that matter, pushing society from the edges, and making goddamn amazing music, starting on-line banks and generally being relevant over and over again. All while having crazy eyes.

The world is not the same this morning.

After Hours with Rixx Javix


Eveoganda is coming up on its sixth year of serving the Eve community. And after 1,780 posts, countless pieces of art, comics, wallpapers, events, hats, cards, videos, and everything else that has happened during that time - it is time to try something different. A new challenge to keep the creative juices flowing. Originally my idea was to create a TV show called "Gate to Gate" and have some fun animating Rixx doing a talk show. But frankly that concept may have been waaaaay ahead of its time, and even though I think it is incredibly fun, no one else seemed to care one way or the other. Ker-plunk, it landed and went splat. I may return to it someday down the road.

This isn't the first time I've considered doing a podcast. I've floated the idea several times here in these pages over the past five years. But I always stopped short of doing it. For one thing, there are so many great podcasts already out there. For another it isn't a visual medium, which (let's face it) is more my area. So I've been extremely hesitant to take the plunge.

Until about two weeks ago as my wife and I were watching the Marc Maron show on Netflix. Marc's WTF Podcast is one of my all time favorites and the idea started to percolate around in my brain that something similar would work in the context of gaming and geek culture. A single host, some great stories about gaming, life and experiences, and then great guests from the Eve community and beyond. It can be about Eve, or it can be about anything. Keep it chill, keep it conversational, professional and entertaining. This seed of an idea seemed extremely interesting to me. I finally had a hook I could sink my teeth into.

It remains to be seen (or heard!) if I can actually do any of that! But that has never stopped me before, so I'm going to give it the old college try. My plan is to get 4 shows in the can before launch, so I've already managed to line up 4 guests for the first 4 shows. The show will be weekly at first and if it proves to be worth it, might go into bi-weekly release at some point. Who knows. Right now I'm working on the format and trying my hand at composing some original jazz pieces to run in the background. And trying to figure out how to record from Skype and TS so I can grab those guest conversations and then get everyone lined up to do them.

And then get my own head wrapped around the idea and get some practice reps going. As a life-long background producer man-behind-the-curtain type, taking center stage makes me a tad nervous. But this is why the "hook", the concept is so important. If it is something I believe in, then I'm pretty much willing to go to the wall to make it happen.

So there ya go. I'm excited. And I hope the final result is something that you will enjoy and subscribe to and listen to regularly. I'm going to do everything I can to make it worth your time.




Rough Day of Pew


It has been a long time since I wrote one of these "day of" posts, so let's take a look at my day in space yesterday. The area around our home base has been extremely busy lately, of course, so its been feast or famine when it comes to finding good fights. This is both a great thing and a challenge depending on what resources are at hand at any given moment. When your pilots tend to be spread out all over New Eden forming up can be challenging. So often, we just stick to the basics and see what we can make happen.

The day before I ended up jumping into Santo and his band of smart-bombing gate camper cowards, so I'd lost a Rifter and my Pod. So I wanted to stick with cheaper ships now that my head candy had been cleared out for me. So I decided to grab another Rifter and see if I could encourage anyone to take me on.

I got very excited when I saw the lone Algos on scan. I had already tried seven other fights leading up to it and they had all turned tail and run off. Including a three man small gang that would have destroyed my t1 Frigate. So I was primed to try anything. I knew going in that the Algos would be a tough target and I'd most likely explode, but nothing ventured nothing gained. You never know going in to a fight what will happen, how the other guy is fit, or what their skill level is. At least I don't. I never bother to check. I just attack. So I OH'd my prop mod in anticipation of his drones, and dived right in. Luckily for me he turned out to be rather poorly fit and the fight didn't last long. The same could not be said of the Thrasher that showed up next. When fighting a Thrasher with a Rifter you need to make one of two assumptions in order to live. You need to guess if he is Artie or AC fit right up front without any prior knowledge. In this case I made the right guess. On approach he hit very, very hard and I was already into mid-armor by the time I manually got in under his guns. After that it was just a matter of managing incoming damage and staying alive long enough for help to arrive. Methea arrived in the knick of time, but the Thrasher would have exploded either way.

By this time a bunch of us in Frigates were swarming around and we detected a group of faction and t2 ships that might want a fight. In the back and forth that followed I got caught on a gate with a Vengeance and a Hookbill, so long Rifter. I will say that the Vengeance was in half-armor, so not bad for my plunky little t1 Frigate.

I re-shipped into a Comet but by the time I got back they had run off. We had a good fight with a small gang on a gate when we caught a Tristan, a Tormentor and a Comet. That was a good fight and we didn't lose anyone, so op success.

Sometimes I can be rather aggressive and get myself into trouble. I went for tackle on a Dragoon before the rest of our gang was in position and paid the price for it. Everyone else landed too late to help me, so I go boom. Which is what I deserved. The Dragoon died though.

And here is where things took a turn for the worse. I should have recognized this and docked up and stopped playing, but I had some extra time yesterday evening and I wanted to make the most of it. In the back of my head my brain is screaming at me, it has been a good day don't ruin it! When you've played Eve as long as I have you can sometimes tell when the universe is swinging around against you. Small things usually. A prop mod might not activate for some reason. A gate seems to take longer than usual to fire. A ship you'd normally toast stays alive longer than it should. Your Corp mates are landing later than usual. It's all small, insignificant stuff that can add up quickly. I have zero rational data to back these claims up, but I am 100% right about it.

Anyway, attacking a good player in an Algos with a Tristan isn't about bad luck. Its about stoopid. But I will say that my prop mod failed to activate. A sign.

Oh and I was out of fitted small ships, so I grabbed a Succubus that was laying around and undocked in it. Remember earlier when I used tons of pilot skill to get in under the Thrasher's guns in my Rifter? Well apparently I forgot all of that and derped myself right into the lasers of a Coercer. Its these kind of things that really sting. When you know you derped yourself and you could have done much better. When the outcome should have been different and yet you still lost your ship. I should have won that fight. But I didn't.

Ok back to cheap t1 Frigates. I grabbed one of Nix's Merlins off of contract and headed out. I made a few adjustments to the basic fit, decided on dual webs instead of the scram/web combo. A few systems over and I saw the Garmur on scan. Ok maybe normal people would see that and decide, y'know I should probably just move along. But not me. I saw that as a challenge. How cool would it be if I killed the Garmur with my Merlin? So I planned out my attack and set the tarp. I acted all stoopid and ended up pulling him into me on a novice gate. The Garmur landed right next to me! Perfect! Except... I kept smashing the WRONG HOT KEY!! And he pulled range, and the rest was a slow ballet of death. Argh.

Did I stop there? Of course not. I only stopped after my Atron died to a Tormentor it should have beaten easily. I finally got the message. I docked up and called it a night.

Good day though. I had a blast.







Rixx Has Point Podcast


I've been thinking about doing a podcast for over three years, I've even mentioned it many times here in these pages. So the other night while we were watching the new season of Maron on Netflix, I decided it was time to get off the pot and do eet! I'm a huge fan of Marc Maron's WTF podcast and while I have no intentions of trying to emulate his show, it does sort of fit the general expectations I've set for myself. Goodness knows it may all crash and burn horribly. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It is time to branch out and try something new. I've been banging it in these pages for a long time now and while the blog is doing well, it is about time to expand things a bit. Plus I finally have the new computer up and running, new audio set-up, and all the software I'll need to make it happen. So why not?

I plan on taking elements from the blog and translating them into a weekly show. A short weekly show, I'm thinking of aiming for between 30-60 minutes tops. I don't know about you, but I prefer a shorter show. It gives me a much better chance of finding time to listen to it. Plus I think its a good idea to try and keep things moving. I'd also like to aim at having a guest for each show if possible. I'm not trying to re-create or publish something like anyone else's show. My goal is to create something rather unique and that stands on its own. But I'm also leaving things open to develop over time. A show like this needs to work on its own merits, so we'll see where it takes us.

So this post is really just an announcement that I'm moving forward with it. I'm talking with the guys at Evil At Work about hosting, it seems the timing may work out perfectly since they are just about ready to launch a podcasting home themselves. If that works out then that will solve some back-end headaches for me and give the podcast a place to live and do whatever it is destined to do.

What makes a Pirate in Eve?

No other question has popped up as much here in these pages over the past seven years. Every so often someone will make the case that there are no pirates in Eve. And then I'll have to drag my arguments back out here to prove that people don't know what they are talking about. Usually the argument goes something like this, people who PvP are not Pirates. They are PvPers, so Piracy must be dead. If it ever existed in the first place. Does anyone ransom Pods anymore? I don't hear about that, so it must not happen. If I don't hear about it, and it isn't happening, then Piracy must be a Myth.

I became a full-time resident of Low Sec back in January 2011 when my new corp Lucifer's Hammer started recruiting in Syndicate. Shortly after that my sec-status reached -10 and has been there ever since, not once in those five years reaching above -10. Negative sec status is not required to be a Pirate, there are other ways, but in my opinion it is a result of being a Pirate. Criminal. Bad guy. Pirate. It all goes hand in hand. If Concord or the Empires like you then that is strange, isn't it?

So Sec Status has something to do with it. But again, I suppose you could be a Pirate and extort High-Sec Mission Runners for a living. Doesn't seem likely, but I'll leave that to other people. In my personal opinion Pirates primarily live in Low-Security space. If I go into High Sec people shoot me, I even get a warning saying Criminals are not welcome. So even the Empires know I'm a bad person. Which I am not by the way.

So what else make a person a Pirate? Sec-Status. Low Sec. What else? Ransoming pods? Stealing assets? Being annoying? Trolling local? What!?!

This part is what annoys those people that want to label and describe everything in the world. There are many different kinds, styles, attitudes and approaches for Pirates inside of New Eden. Even within Stay Frosty we have many different players doing things their own way. Some of our pilots are not Pirates. Some are on their way to becoming Pirates and some have decided to never become Pirates. Some people PvP for fun and never steal, ransom, or take something that is not theirs. And yet they belong to a Pirate Corporation. How do we reconcile these various approaches to Piracy in order to build a definition of what Piracy is?

We can't. For one thing Eve has changed under our feet. In the old days when ISK wasn't as easy to get, ransoms were a viable way to make a decent living. No one wanted to lose an expensive pod. But once CCP started allowing real money to purchase ISK inside of Eve, well those days are long gone. Yes, I still try to ransom pods now and then (especially when I think they have candy in their head) but it rarely matters anymore. I've seen pilots choose to die with implants in their head, instead of paying up. That would never have happened five years ago. There is just way too much ISK inside of Eve. The risk/reward balance is way off these days.

Even so I've managed to make a living inside of Eve doing nothing but Piracy for five years. I don't mine, mission, rat, or otherwise do anything but undock and play Eve on HARD mode every single day. This is what I enjoy and how I choose to play Eve. It doesn't make it better than other choices, it is simply my way of playing. I like playing on Difficult. I make my isk from loots, from extortion, from pay-back schemes (which I cannot detail here in these pages, sorry) and from the largesse of my Alliance and Corporation. And, of course, from the greater Eve Community.

I know without a doubt that if there is one solitary Pirate in New Eden then it is me. I am a Pirate. I want to keep Low-Sec free of Empires, free of laws, free of Factional Controls, a free and independent place of adventure, fun, pew and piracy.

Because when it comes down to it, Piracy is all about perspective. It isn't a definition. Or a set of rules. It is the opposite of those things. It is an attitude. And you either have it, or you don't.
